I opted for Wilko's paint, a bargain at £5.95 a tin! |
When we moved house as teens, my sister chose to decorate her room with a blue and black palette (she's a bit 'alternative') and painted one of her walls with blackboard paint. It was ace! As we were teens and didn't really get on (punched each other whenever we saw each other) I didn't really get to 'play' with it, but her and her friends' used it to write messages to each other, copy out self indulgent song lyrics, and doodle on; and quite frankly I was jealous in my stupid purple and turquoise non-drawable-on room!
So now that we're in our forever family home (which we never intend moving from, and therefore can do what we like to it without worrying about how it will affect it's re-sale value- Hooray!) I took my opportunity to create my own blackboard walls!
Initially I had planned to paint a house silhouette in Boo's playroom, a butterfly silhouette in her bedroom, and then fashion some kind of notice board for me in the kitchen. But then I looked on Pinterest for ideas and my mind was blown!
Every corner I turned in my house I saw a new opportunity for blackboard paint to be used! I was in danger of OTTing the whole thing and ending up with a black house! I calmed myself and looked round the house for unusual and unused surface areas and decided upon 3 places that would become my blackboard havens!
My first proffering to the blackboard paint Gods was the side of my staircase. I must confess I was rather pleased (smug) with myself for thinking of this as I think it is pretty unique. And as it is in the hallway acts as a perfect notice board for the whole family!
My next genius idea was to, instead of just painting a shape on Boo's bedroom wall (that she would outgrow and would really only serve as a standard chalk board) I would paint the doors of her built in sliding wardrobe- they needed a lick of paint anyway so it was killing two birds with one stone as well! I thought that she would be able to use these for as long as she lives here (has a little cry at the thought of her ever moving out) and I can use them to communicate with her as she gets older- like writing her chores, and leaving her cute little messages that show her I still love her even though she's a terrible teen who wouldn't be seen dead with me. It also meant that Boo would have a huge space to vent her artistic prowess, so I bought her jumbo chalk for this area!
I also made a sneaky purchase of some Uniball Liquid Chalk Pens and used these to draw some pics to give her ideas and for something to colour. The pens don't smudge and only come off with a wet cloth so are great for setting a scene on a blackboard! They're also super bright and much neater and prettier than actual chalk.
I made use of these on my next blackboard project too! I decided to use the paint to transform our cheap, old ikea coffee table top! I had spray painted it blue before but it had got all scratched so, again, needed a new coat of paint anyway!
I am super pleased with how it's turned out! As it's a table top, and so will face a bit of wear and tear, I did 3 coats of paint on it (as opposed to the 2 on the other surfaces) and so far it remains scratchless!
I used the chalk pens to draw out a road and village scene and used her existing toys on top of it. I am super excited about this as it means I can just draw a bespoke 'playmat' for ANY of her playsets on it! A farmyard, fairytale castle grounds, a train station and countryside, an undersea world- the possibilities are endless!!!
So please grab yourself a tin of paint, have a wander round your house, and revel in the possibilities before you! Blackboard paint has so many uses and it great for the whole family to enjoy!
